1994 wind standards
HUD tightened wind design rules for homes built from July 1994, adding the three wind zones. Homes built before that are treated as higher wind risk by many carriers.

In 1994 HUD strengthened the wind-resistance requirements in the HUD Code and introduced the three wind zones. Homes built after July 1994 are engineered for the zone they were built for, while earlier homes were built to a single lower national standard.
That makes 1994 an important cut-off for insurers. Homes built before then are seen as more vulnerable to wind, especially near the coast, and can face higher prices, higher wind deductibles or decline.
