Wind/hail deductible

A separate, usually percentage-based deductible (commonly 1%, 2% or 5% of Coverage A) applied only to wind and hail losses.

Also called: Percentage deductible

A wind/hail deductible is a separate deductible that applies only to damage from wind or hail. Instead of a flat dollar amount, it is usually a percentage of your dwelling coverage limit, commonly 1%, 2% or 5%.

For example, with an $80,000 dwelling limit and a 2% wind/hail deductible, you would pay the first $1,600 of a covered wind or hail loss. Other kinds of claims use your regular deductible instead.

Carriers use percentage deductibles because wind and hail claims are frequent and costly for manufactured homes. Higher percentages lower your premium but raise what you pay out of pocket. Which percentages are offered varies by carrier and state.

Common questions

Can I get a flat-dollar wind/hail deductible?

Some carriers offer one, often in lower-risk areas. Many use percentage deductibles only.
